Kingdom's commitment to human rights a valuable asset'

AMMAN - Jordan's commitment to human rights improves the country's prospects for peaceful reform and sets it apart from the countries in the region that have experienced political upheavals this year, Poland's Human Rights Defender Irena Lipowicz said on Tuesday.Commenting on the impact of the Arab Spring, she said human rights are a major point of concern in the countries undergoing political transitions in the region, adding that two weeks ago, she met with groups from Tunisia and Egypt who were seeking assistance in defending human rights and taking advantage of the Arab Spring to that end."However, the situation in Jordan cannot be compared to those in Egypt and Tunisia and other Arab countries witnessing upheavals. Jordan has made significant progress in the way of protecting human rights compared to Egypt and Tunisia. It only needs to make minor changes, contrary to other countries in the region where human rights, especially those of vulnerable groups, are widely violated, such as Libya," she said.[..more...]

HRH PRINCE EL HASSAN BIN TALAL - "VOICES FROM WEST ASIA-NORTH AFRICA"

Jagiellonian University, Krakov, March 8, 2011

Professor Leszek Korporowicz, Director of the Institute of the Middle and Far East,Faculty and Students,

It is an honour to be here, and to cement the ties between one of the oldest universities in Central Europe, and the University of Jordan - a fledgling by comparison, but not without a growing reputation in the Arab world.I arrived in Warsaw on Sunday, and have been humbled by the spirit of friendship and warmth with which I've been met in Poland ever since. Apparently there's an old Polish proverb to the effect that "a guest sees more in an hour than a host in a year." There's certainly nothing like visiting a place to learn about it. At the same time however - and especially with regard to academic exchange - there is nothing passive about receiving a visitor; both in a way are travelling together, and learning from each other. It is my hope that some of your faculty and students can visit as we structure a relationship between the Jagiellonian and the Jordan University and hope that our historical experiences - from the southern end of the Volga through to the Black Sea to the West Asia region - are not devoid of commonality.  After all, trade has been a feature of the Route of Ideas, as I like to call it, from the days of the Byzantines through to the Ottoman period.[ more]

Based on a memoir by Polish author Sławomir Rawicz titled "The Long Walk", the film tells a story of a group of refugees led by a Pole named Janusz who escape together from a Siberian gulag in 1940. It portrays their 4000-mile hostile terrain walk to freedom in India across borders, deserts, mountains. Featuring breathtaking turns and a strong cast, including Colin Farrell and Ed Harris, it is said to be one of the most visually stunning films of the year.

Chopin great recordings from days past

AMMAN - Why would you want to buy classical recordings that date back to the 1950s and 1960s when humble, basic stereophony was as high-tech as 3D TV is today, and technical limitations of all kinds marred the quality of the sound captured on disc? Because of the yet unmatched level of musicality and artistic expression that the great performers used to deliver. In this year that sees the world celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frژdژric (Fryderyk in Polish) Chopin, the composer and pianist of Polish-French parentage, it is very interesting to look back at the audio productions from around the middle of the twentieth century, before hi-fidelity sound existed and well before the digital age.The recordings of Chopin works constitute an ideal ground of exploration for those aficionados who love to compare the old and the new. Among the great pianists of the past era whose recordings stand out are Romanian Dinu Lipatti and French Samson Franچois. For many connoisseurs today the performances of Lipatti and Franچois remain the absolute references, as far as pianistic talent and musical expression are concerned. As for the technical quality of the discs this is of course another story [ more]
